The Final Boss Project: Ep6 – Death Egg Robot

The Final Boss Project is where we look at old game final bosses. They are dissected and analysed, then redesigned and re-imagined to bring them more in line with current sensibilities. This entry we look at the final boss of Sonic 2, the Death Egg Robot. Working on the Death Egg Robot is myself, and amateur illustrator Jeremy Mortensen.

The Redesign

Design Notes

The Death Egg Robot draws on the pod aspect of Robotniks previous boss appearances throughout Sonic 2. The robot retains the basic form of the original, providing a more slimmed down design which will allow for more varied attack options. Robotnik pilots the Death Egg Robot from the head section, while Mecha Sonic is incorporated into the mid-section to provide additional support. Also, to connect the Death Egg Robot and the narrative Death Egg fortress together, the robot is also used as a housing for the Chaos Emeralds being used to power the station. This means that the robot has a permanent connection to the structure.

Updated Background

After his first defeat by Sonic, the genius Robotnik decided that bigger may just be better. So he set about designing and building a massive orbital station, dubbed the Death Egg. Formidable while powered by conventional methods, the legendary Chaos Emeralds would provide the fortress the kick it needed to bring the world under Robotnik's domination.

With Sonic around, getting the Chaos Emeralds would only be part of the problem. Hanging on to them would be the true challenge. With this in mind Robotnik hit on a fantastic idea. The housing for the Chaos Emeralds, when combined with his pod, could easily be converted into an unstoppable robot. Not only would this keep them safe, while powering the station, but the robot could draw on the power of the emeralds and finally squash that troublesome blue hedgehog.

And with the new android Mecha Sonic learning all of Sonic's weaknesses, and adding this knowledge to the Death Egg Robot, Robotnik's victory is assured.
